Futomaki is the generous, thick-cut sushi roll that turns heads on any catering table — a fat cylinder of seasoned rice and nori packed with several fillings, then sliced to reveal a bright mosaic of colour in every piece. At Sushijiro Catering, our futomaki is rolled by hand using the rice-seasoning techniques carried over from our omakase kitchen, giving each round the right balance of vinegar, sweetness and bite.

What is futomaki?

Futomaki literally means “thick roll.” Unlike a slim hosomaki with a single filling, futomaki layers four or more ingredients inside a wide sheet of nori, producing rounds typically 4–5cm across. The appeal is both visual and practical: one piece delivers a complete, satisfying mouthful, which makes it ideal for grazing and shared catering formats.

What’s inside our futomaki

We build each roll for colour contrast and a mix of textures. A classic assortment includes:

  • Sweet rolled tamago (Japanese omelette)
  • Cucumber and pickled daikon for crunch
  • Crab stick or seasoned mushroom (kanpyo)
  • Blanched spinach or seasonal greens
  • A touch of seasoned rice that is freshly cooked, not pre-made

How we serve futomaki for catering

Futomaki travels well and holds its shape, which makes it a reliable choice for buffets and platters. We arrange it on a sushi and sashimi platter, include it across our Japanese buffet spreads, or pack it into bento sets. As a guide, one roll yields about 6–8 slices; for a shared spread, plan 3–4 slices per guest. Exact quantities and platter sizes are confirmed in your quote. We deliver islandwide, from the CBD to the heartlands.

Pairing futomaki on your menu

Because futomaki is filling and colourful, it anchors a sushi selection well. Pair it with lighter nigiri, a crisp tempura assortment, and a warm bowl of miso soup for contrast. For smaller office orders, it slots neatly into a mini buffet. See the full menu to plan the rest of your table.

Dietary notes

Our futomaki is made in a strictly No Pork, No Lard kitchen; please note we are not halal-certified. Rolls contain rice, nori, egg and may include seafood or crab stick, so let us know about allergies. A vegetable-only futomaki can be prepared for vegetarian guests on request.
